About Shirley: Mindful Writing and Art from a Recovering Writer

Some people unwind with a run. I unwind with a pen. Write, Life, Stuff, Etc. is where I practice mindful writing and art out loud, so that anyone curious about slowing down with a notebook has a friendly place to start.

It Started with Crayons and a Poem

I was two years old the first time I put a crayon to paper, and six when I wrote my first poem. Neither habit ever really left. Over the years, those scribbles grew into two poetry folios, still unpublished, one of which wears a cover I illustrated myself.

I call myself a recovering writer: someone finding her way back to the page, one honest sentence at a time. Journaling became the bridge. A few lines each day turned into sketches in the margins, the sketches turned into longer pieces, and before long I wanted to share the whole messy, rewarding process with other people who love paper and ink as much as I do.

Why This Space Exists

Writing is a craft and an art, and it shows up in more forms than most of us are taught to notice: a poem, a grocery-list doodle, a letter, a journal entry nobody else will read. My hope is to shed light on all of them, so that anyone can appreciate the written word, whatever their age or season of life.

What Guides Every Post, Stream, and Episode

Honest

I share the crossed-out lines and the smudged sketches, not only the finished pieces. Real progress looks uneven, and that's okay.

Creative

Poetry, illustration, lettering, printing, design: if it involves making something by hand or heart, it belongs here.

Insightful

Every piece of content tries to leave you with a fresh angle, a gentle question, or a small idea you can try tonight.

More Than a Way to Pass the Time

Writing and art are easy to dismiss as hobbies for idle hours. In my experience, they can be much more: a way to find fulfillment and calm when the world feels chaotic, and a steady practice that supports mental well-being at a time when many of us need it.

I'm not a therapist, and nothing here replaces professional care. What I can offer is my own experience of how putting thoughts on paper, or shapes on a page, can make a heavy day feel a little lighter and help you live more like yourself.

Where Ink Meets Paper (Literally)

Outside this blog, I run Hildegardis Digital Printing, my small, community-based printing and design studio. That work feeds this one: experimenting with print and layout has changed how I think about the shape of a poem and the feel of a finished page. You'll see those experiments pop up in the Creative Process corner of the blog.
